Abstract

The dynamic response of elastic liquid storage tanks with baffle is presented in the paper. The tank wall and baffle are made of elastic, isotropic material. The liquid in the tank is considered in the present case as water. The water is considered to be inviscid and linearly compressible. The response of the coupled system is obtained by using the well known software ADINA, which offers efficient fully coupled fluid-structure interaction capabilities by finite element method. The fluid is modeled in ADINA as a Navier-Stokes fluid using 3-D fluid elements whereas the elastic tank wall and its baffle are modeled with nine node shell elements. Hydrodynamic pressure generated in the fluid-structure interface and the displacement of the tank wall are evaluated. A parametric study has been carried out to study the effectiveness of the baffle for damping liquid oscillations in order to evaluate efficient baffle configuration.
